Herpes – Causes and factors

Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This disease is caused by the transmission of the herpes simplex virus from one person to another. It can be categorized as Herpes type 1 or oral herpes and Herpes type 2 or genital herpes. In all pictures of herpes, sores are the primary symptom. In the case of oral herpes these develop around the lips and mouth, while in the case of genital herpes, you should be able to see sores around the genitals and rectum.

Herpes – Causes and factors
If you look at pictures of herpes, you will see that type 2 herpes sores can affect other parts of the body such as foot soles as well.

Oral herpes can spread from one person to another via an exchange of saliva while kissing or by coming in contact with the open sores of an infected person. Sharing utensils and personal things such as a toothbrush can also transmit the virus from one person to another. On the other hand, genital herpes can be transmitted from one person to another only through unprotected sexual contact with a person carrying the infection. It is important to note that both types can spread from one person to another, even if there are no visible sores. Genital herpes can also be passed on from a mother to a child at childbirth.

Unlike pictures of herpes, the disease does not always show visible signs. In many cases, the virus stays dormant for years until it is triggered into a herpes outbreak. Hence, if you have more than one sexual partner, it is advisable to get yourself regularly checked for STDs. Factors that can trigger such attacks include:

• Weakened immunity
• Tiredness
• Medication that affects your immunity
• Physical and emotional stress
• Menstruation
• Sexual activity

As you can imagine by looking at pictures of herpes, this disease can be quite painful. The first herpes outbreak is usually the worst. This pain is concentrated around the genital area and can be described as an ache or burning sensation especially while urinating. Some people may also notice a discharge from the vagina or penis. Oral herpes is equally painful and can cause a tingling and burning sensation around the lips and mouth.

Medication for herpes can help manage the pain associated with the sores and speed up the healing process. Unfortunately, this disease cannot be cured and treatment merely subdues the symptoms and makes the virus inactive. In the beginning, outbreaks may recur frequently, but with time and age, these outbreaks usually become more spaced out and are less intense. Hence, it is important to protect oneself from STDs like Herpes by always using protection while having sexual intercourse.
