Guide to Choosing an Alzheimer’s Care Center

Almost 8 million people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or some form of dementia every year. This means that most caregivers look for an Alzheimer’s care center nearby for their loved ones. Unlike traditional senior living communities, these facilities offer dedicated settings and services that benefit dementia patients. So, picking the best Alzheimer’s   care center is a challenge, as caregivers have to factor in multiple variables like dementia severity and the Alzheimer’s care center’s cost.

A guide can help one one select the right care center for Alzheimer’s patients.

Guide to Choosing an Alzheimer’s Care Center

1. Check online reviews
It is a common consideration in every Alzheimer’s care center guide, and one should not skimp on reading reviews. So, before scheduling a visit to the facility, consider what people say about it. Caregivers can find several reviews on the facility’s website and independent third-party sites. Consider contacting the families of Alzheimer’s patients living in the particular facility. Ask how they feel about them and the care their seniors receive. Furthermore, caregivers can also discuss their reservations with a medical professional or a nearby physician. It helps to know their opinion on a particular facility before enrolling patients there.

2. Visit the facility
Several communities are willing to open their doors to families who want to evaluate the Alzheimer’s care center nearby. It is the bare minimum expectation one has as a caregiver. But if the distance is an issue, consider a virtual visit. Many facilities have pre-set routes for the tour. However, a trusted center would be willing to give a virtual tour. That said, it is recommended that one visits in person. It can help assess whether the facility can address the patient’s mobility conditions, is safe and secure, and offers privacy. While touring the facility, asking questions is crucial.

3. Get acquainted with the staff
Does the patient have late-stage dementia symptoms? Is the onset taking root? Memory care is a challenging niche. Caregivers want a facility with a well-equipped team capable of dealing with different dementia symptoms. Unfortunately, the patient’s  condition may worsen before it gets better. So, caregivers want a center with trained staff who can cater to the increased care demands of patients during such situations.

So, always inquire about the  staff’s  educational background, years of experience, first-responder emergency training, and availability, i.e., the staff-to-patient ratio. Go with a facility with highly-trained staff equipped to cater to the needs of patients with varying severity.

4. Check the turnover rate
It can be concerning if the facility has a high turnover rate.  The center  is  probably  not well  run when the management or nurse turnover is high.  Alternatively, staffing may be a problem, resulting in nurses being overworked.  Further, it may also mean that the level of care offered  is subpar , resulting in staff leaving for positions in facilities that take their care more seriously.

So, before selection, ask the facility how long its longest-serving nurse has been on staff, how long the current management has been in charge, and how long the CNAs have worked with them.

If one infers that a facility has a high turnover rate, one should not consider it, as it may not be the best for Alzheimer’s patients.  They may  not  feel  comfortable  around new people and may feel lost. Some may even question where they are and why they are there. Moreover, when the facility constantly adds new names and faces for the patients to recognize, it can get tricky for them.

5. Enquire about meals
Food is a crucial factor. So, ensure that one checks the cleanliness and the meal setting level. Schedule a meeting with a registered nutritionist and inquire how they will address the patient’s nutritional needs. Check if they offer an alternative if the patient does not enjoy a particular meal. Usually, facilities offer sandwiches or other palatable options for every hot meal to ensure the seniors are  well fed .

6. Check if they have companion rooms
If one approves of the facility but the cost of the Alzheimer’s care center is an issue, one can look for companion rooms. So, inquire if they have such options. If so, the management can ensure that the patient gets a roommate who is compatible with them. They will ensure both patients can coexist. Sometimes, patients are happier in companion rooms than in private ones. It gives them a person to interact with at all times.

7. Ask about the simulations they have
Does the center have a dedicated area for lower-functioning and higher-functioning individuals? What measures do they take to encourage active participation? How much time do patients spend in their rooms? These are crucial questions one must ask the provider.

8. Alzheimer’s care center cost
Broadly, different facilities have varied fee structures because of their distinct offerings. Usually, the facilities function on a monthly payment model. However, this doesn’t include the cost of treatment and medical supplies. So, talk to the community about the added fee one must bear besides the accommodation cost. Do account for it all to ensure the place is worth the value.
