Causes of Bottom of Foot Pain

Foot pain may result from injuries or factors causing inflammation in the ligaments and tendons in the foot. For instance, arthritis may cause foot pain. When the nerves in the feet are affected, it may lead to acute pain and peripheral neuropathy. Foot pain may occur in the heel, toe, sole, and arches.

The causes of foot pain may be different types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid, reactive, psoriatic and septic arthritis besides tendinitis or plantar warts.

Causes of Bottom of Foot Pain

What causes bottom of foot pain?
Here is an elaboration of the possible causes of foot pain. Let’s get to the bottom of foot pain causes:

Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis happens as a result of damage to the plantar fascia ligament, due to excess pressure on the feet. This may cause stiffness and pain.

Arthritis
Foot pain may also result from different types of arthritis such as rheumatoid, reactive, psoriatic, and septic arthritis.

Sprains in the feet
Strains and sprains are injuries mostly due to physical activity. These are quite common and may vary from minor to acute. Sprains occur in the joints and affect ligaments, which connect bones. Strains affect tendons or muscles, which connect muscle to bone.

Ingrown toenails
Ingrown toenails result from the nail growing into the skin on the side of the nail. This may lead to redness, tenderness, and also bleeding in certain cases.

Fibromyalgia
This is a disorder resulting in pain and aching at certain trigger points on the body. Common trigger points are the neck, shoulder, chest, elbows, hips, and knees. It also results in fatigue, sleeplessness, and insomnia and may lead to depression and anxiety. This may also be a cause of foot pain.

Tendinitis
Tendons join the muscle with the bone. Tendinitis is a medical condition occurring due to the inflammation and irritation of the tendons. Tendinitis leads to severe pain and also results in tenderness. This makes it difficult to properly move the joints.

Fracture
A fracture is the condition of a broken bone. This may occur due to motor vehicle accidents, falls, or injuries from sports. Treatment may be, among others, surgery or a cast.

Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. This runs down the spinal cord and then into each leg. It is related to the control of your legs. When this nerve is affected, it causes sciatica. This leads to pain in the legs, buttocks, and back. The pain may also be acute. Sciatica is caused as a result of an injury to the said sciatic nerve or an injury to the region which will affect the nerve, for instance, the vertebrae.

Symptoms include pain which gets worse with movement and weakness in the legs. You can also experience urinary incontinence.

Bunions
A bunion is a large swelling at the side of the big toe. This is due to the big toe not being straight.

Gout
Gout is a medical condition where there is swelling or inflammation of the joints. This is due to the presence of excess uric acid in the body. This may lead to painful swelling and acute pain in the joints and feet.

Treatment for various foot pains
Let’s look at the treatment options for foot bottom pain.

Arch
Plantar fasciitis usually leads to pain in the arch. It can also affect the heel. Flat feet can be treated by rest, application of ice, or using a cane for walking. Surgery may also be required.

Ball
Metatarsalgia is swelling or inflammation of the ball of the foot. Usually, it is due to footwear that does not fit or activity such as running or jumping that causes stress. You should use ice for your feet, take medications for pain, and use good footwear.

Heel
You should rest your foot. Also, you can do muscle stretches for the foot. Medications for pain can also be taken. Use shoes with proper support and a good sole. In the case of a heel fracture, use crutches and do not apply pressure on the heels. Use pads for the heels and wear a cast for the bone. For a stone bruise (that is a bruise at the bottom of the feet), use ice and make sure your feet get rest. You can also take medications.

Toe
Conditions such as gout lead to pain in the toes. Gout is the swelling or inflammation of joints which occurs due to the accumulation of uric acid in the body. It can lead to acute pain in the feet. You should make sure that your feet get rest. You can apply ice to it and go for medications. For gout, however, the best remedy is a lifestyle change and a change in your diet, such as avoiding foods that lead to or exacerbate gout and sticking to a regular schedule for exercise.
