Turmeric
For centuries, turmeric has been used for medicinal purposes because of its great anti-inflammatory property. This spice contains a compound called curcumin, which is a natural inflammation fighter and has great healing power. For patients who are suffering from arthritis, turmeric helps in relieving chronic joint pain, inflammation, and joint stiffness. One can either consume supplements with turmeric extract or consume turmeric in its natural form by including it in their diet.
Garlic
Just like other members of the allium family, like onions and leeks, garlic too has an anti-inflammatory property. It consists of a compound called diallyl disulfide, which is known to fight inflammation and pain in arthritis patients. Garlic is also believed to help in preventing or reducing the rate at which the joint cartilages wear out in arthritis patients. It is best to include fresh garlic in one’s diet rather than using bottled garlic or the packaged variants, as they have preservatives that lower its effectiveness in alleviating arthritis pain.
Fishes
Omega-3 is said to be helpful in reducing pain that is caused by joint diseases. Hence, fishes like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, which are excellent sources of omega-3 are recommended by rheumatologists. It is advised to eat fish at least a couple of times in a week to ensure that one’s body gets a sufficient amount of omega-3. For vegetarians, soya bean acts as a good source of omega-3.
Vitamin C
The antioxidants in vitamin C are said to help in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis. In fact, it is observed that patients who regularly take vitamin C supplements are at 11% lower risk of developing osteoarthritis. One can increase their dietary intake of vitamin C by eating fruits like pineapples, kiwis, and strawberries. For those who feel that their dietary intake of Vitamin C is not enough and wish to take supplements, should not take supplements which have doses higher than 65 to 85 mg. This is because an extremely high level of vitamin C can increase one’s chances of suffering from kidney stones.
Cherries
Anthocyanin is the chemical which is responsible for the red color of the cherries. It is also highly beneficial for arthritis patients. Tart cherries are believed to be the best type of cherries to help fight the symptoms of arthritis. By drinking tart cherry juice, one can reduce the pain and the stiffness caused by osteoarthritis.
